DNC Deploys Distributed Organizing Program in Push for Tuesday’s Iowa State Senate Special Election

DNC to support Democrat Catelin Drey in her attempt to continue Democrats’ overperformance streak in special elections this year in a Trump +11 district

Today, the DNC announced an organizing push to support Iowa State Senate candidate Catelin Drey in her bid to break the Iowa Senate Republican supermajority in tomorrow’s special election. Drey is running in a Trump+11 district, putting Democrats in a position to overperform in the 37th out of the 38 key elections this year.

Drey is running against an extreme opponent, Christopher Prosch, who has said that rape victims should carry their pregnancies to term and likened the availability of abortion to the Holocaust. He also thinks climate change is a hoax, downplayed the Jan. 6th insurrection, and thinks the 2020 election was stolen.

Now, the DNC is deploying our distributed organizing team of over 30,000 volunteers for GOTV and is hosting phone and text banks in conjunction with the Iowa Democratic Party in an effort to break the Iowa Republican supermajority in the Iowa Senate.

Specifically, the DNC will support the Drey campaign and the Iowa Democratic Coordinated operation by:

  • Driving our national volunteer base to support the campaign in the final days with voter contact via calls, canvassing and digital engagement.
  • Contacting thousands of voters over digital platforms like text and email to help them make their plan to vote.

Democrats are overperforming in legislative special elections by an average of nearly 16 points. With Drey’s strong campaign and the support of the Iowa Democratic Party, the DNC is all-in to ensure another overperformance in this election.

DNC Chair Ken Martin issued the following statement:

“For too long, the DNC has virtually ignored races up and down the ballot that have profound consequences on our future. Rebuilding the Democratic Party starts from the ground up, and we’ve seen amazing victories in Iowa so far this year. We’re all hands on deck to break the Iowa Republican supermajority and invest our resources in supporting candidates on the ground everywhere.”

Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart issued the following statement:

“Iowans are fed up with Republicans who have left our state 49th in the nation in economic growth, 48th in personal income growth and with some of the fastest rising cancer rates in the nation. To stop extreme Republican policies that are leading Iowa in the wrong direction, Democrats need to win everywhere. That’s why we are recruiting candidates like Catelin Drey who voters can trust because they know and love their communities. It’s time to put Iowans over insider and partisan interests.”
