With one week until the midterm elections, we’re revisiting Donald Trump’s own words to Americans over the last 21 months of his presidency. His message to voters has been clear: Trump and his administration are out of touch and couldn’t care less about the rising prices and soaring inflation that have made life harder for working people. While Trump and JD Vance launched reckless tariffs and started a deadly and costly war with Iran, Trump, his family, and his administration have taken every opportunity to line their own pockets and hand out favors to billionaires.
Instead of providing any relief to families, small businesses, and farmers, here’s what Trump has said about rising costs in his economy:
- “I love the inflation.”
- “You know, we have already stopped the inflation.”
- “Tariff is my favorite word.”

In response, DNC Deputy Communications Director Kendall Witmer released the following statement:
“Donald Trump does not care that his agenda is making life unaffordable for everyday Americans — he said so himself. On the campaign trail, Trump promised to ‘defeat inflation’ and lower prices on ‘Day One.’ Now, inflation is eating up Americans’ paychecks. His reckless tariffs and war of choice with Iran have spiked costs on everything from gas and groceries to diesel and fertilizer. It’s no wonder voters are outraged, and in one week, they are ready to deliver major defeats to Trump and Republicans.”
REMINDER: Consumer inflation reached 3.7% in September — above expectations and the highest rate since May — as high prices have nearly wiped out all wage gains since January 2025.
