Democratic Iowa House Candidate Angel Ramirez Clinches Sweeping Victory in Special Election

Today, the DNC congratulates Democratic candidate Angel Ramirez for her victory in tonight’s Iowa House District 78 special election. With this victory, the Iowa Legislature gains another Democrat who will fight for working people and defend against Republicans’ extreme agenda.

Ramirez’s victory follows a string of 2025 special election overperformances from earlier this year in Iowa, Wisconsin, Virginia, and other states across the country. While Republicans champion a losing agenda that governs for the ultra-wealthy, Democrats have never wavered in their commitment to protect working Americans and fight on their behalf. As voters grow fed up with Trump, Musk, and any Republican that supports their out-of-touch polices, Democrats are taking full advantage of our steady momentum to win elections and build back our power across the map. Democrats have now overperformed in 19 out of the 20 elections so far in 2025, compared to the top of the 2024 ticket. One thing remains clear: Momentum is on our side.

“Congratulations to Rep.-elect Ramirez on her sweeping victory in Iowa in what was a clear rebuke of Trump and every Republican who co-signs his reckless agenda. Trump has been in office for 100 days and the results have been a disaster – Iowans are seeing their prices rise, jobs cut, and promises Trump made to Iowa’s farmers and working families broken,” said DNC Chair Ken Martin. “Today’s win underscores what we continue to see everywhere: Democrats are overperforming in red, purple, and blue districts alike. Voters are fed up with Republicans and are ready for leaders who will actually put their families first. Democrats are providing commonsense solutions for working Americans and gaining more momentum every day.”

“Tonight, Angel Ramirez, nonprofit co-founder and community leader, won the election to represent House District 78. Her fit with the district, her character, her hard work, and the overwhelming support of Democrats who stepped up to help organise in Linn County made this possible,” said Iowa Democratic Party Chair Rita Hart. “I’d like to thank Ramirez for her readiness to represent her constituents and to stand up for the rights and prosperity of all Iowans. The scale of our victory tonight shows that as long as Democrats run candidates who understand and fight for their communities, we can win elections across the state. There’s more work to be done, but tonight we can rest assured that things are looking a little brighter. We won this election in good shape. Tomorrow we  get ready for the next.”
