WATCH: Senate Republicans Vote AGAINST Amendment to Save Rural Hospitals
June 30, 2025
While Republicans give their ultra-wealthy donors another round of tax breaks, rural communities are left holding the bill.
The GOP is putting over 300 rural hospitals across the country at risk of closing or cutting services — threatening to shut down the largest employer in many communities and ripping away critical care from seniors, disabled Americans, pregnant women, and working families.
Instead of standing up for rural families, Republicans are affirming with this vote that they’d prefer to let them suffer to line the pockets of their billionaire donors. No billionaire tax break is worth risking people’s lives and livelihoods.
WATCH: Senator Ed Markey and Senate Democrats stood up for communities served by over 300 rural hospitals, voting to cut any part of the GOP budget that would force rural hospitals to close or cut services.
Senator Ed Markey: “I rise today to cut any part of this big ugly bill that would force rural hospitals to limit their services or actually close their doors. I have released a list of more than 300 rural hospitals across the country at risk of closing or stopping services because of any major cuts to Medicare and Medicaid. Today, that’s what Republicans are guaranteeing with a $1 trillion cut to our healthcare system they would create in this bill. My Republican colleagues’ so-called Medicaid cuts replacement fund is like giving aspirin to a cancer patient. It is not enough. … No billionaire tax break or Donald Trump pat on the back is worth the risk of people’s lives. Vote yes on this motion. Stop these health care cuts.”
Republicans voted against protecting funding for rural hospitals, devastating seniors, disabled Americans, and working families across the country.
Senate Cloakroom: “Not agreed to, 49-51: Markey motion to commit Cal. #107, H.R.1, One Big Beautiful Bill Act, to the Finance Committee with instructions. (re: Rural Hospitals)”
